Alabama has a long list of felonies with no set statute of limitations. For those that do it is set at 3 years. It may be a misdemeanor set at 12 months. The statute is met once an indictment or warrant is issued, regardless of whether it can be served immediately or not.

Alabama has a long list of felonies with no set statute of limitations. For those that do, probably including grand theft, it is set at 3 years. The statute is met once an indictment or warrant is issued, regardless of whether it can be served immediately or not. And if it involves state or county property it can be 6 years.

A private person does not make the determination about whether an accused will be charged with a crime or not. The individual simply has the choice about whether or not he/she will report the alleged crime to law enforcement, and then cooperate with law enforcement in prosecuting the accused.

There is no set limit of time during which a theft must be reported. The length of time in which it must be prosecuted depends on which criminal offense it is prosecuted under. However, the sooner the crime is reported, the more likely it will be prosecuted.
