"The Monkey's Paw" teaches themes of greed, consequences of actions, and the dangers of meddling with fate. It warns against trying to change one's destiny and the potential negative outcomes that may result from interfering with the natural order of things.
The moral is that people should not try to affect things which are beyond human comprehension.
Alternatively, that magic and the supernatural (or any "immoral shortcuts" to fate) are dangerous.
The story is emblematic of an old proverb "be careful what you wish for."
"Don't tamper with your fate."
"be careful what you wish for or you just might get it."
Because he was dying of toe cancer
