Charles Dickens' novella "A Christmas Carol" was published in December of 1843 and became an instant success. It is the story of the redemption of a stingy miser named Ebeneezer Scrooge. Scrooge represented an oppressive class of businessman who seemed to delight in the poverty of others, while hoarding every cent he himself earned. Scrooge receives visits from four ghosts or spirits, including and beginning with his former friend and partner, Jacob Marley.
Marley represents an imprisoned soul who must now wander the earth for eternity, desperately desiring to help needy people everywhere, but unable to do so. He offers Scrooge one opportunity to escape his own fate, and says Scrooge will be visited by three spirits who represent Scrooge's own Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. From each Scrooge will learn valuable lessons of the circumstances and choices that led to his miserly life, and shows him the value of humanity as "fellow-travellers" in life.
By the end of the visitations, Scrooge has fully repented of his former greed and cold-heartedness, and resolves to live Christmas "all the year round."
