Did captain cook draw a map that showed Stewart island was joined to the south island?

Not quite. The Cook map [and I have a copy of it] shows some dotted lines between Stewart island and the mainland, and also for some areas a little to the west. Similar marks are made on his map where he was not able to approach the coast closely. For example in the north of Cook Strait - Wellington area. But he does mark and name 'Banks Id', but again both on the island and the shore, he has dotted lines indicating uncertainty. [The reason is that Cook's ships were 'square rigged', and could not sail upwind. Hence their dread of being caught against a downwind shore. So in poor weather he dare not be wrecked.]
