Vera Cruz was a formal siege. The city had a wall on its landward side. Heavy artillery, ship's cannon, was landed and with great effort hauled through the sand and emplaced in carefully located and constructed gun emplacements. Once these batteries opened it was only a matter of time before the walls would be battered down and breaches in them created, through which a storming force of infantry coud enter the city. The city surrendered before that point was reached, however.
