Kenilworth stands at 270 feet above sea level, higher than other castles in the area; defenders could see attackers coming from great distances. Rain could help defenders hold the castle, since it would flood the surrounding marsh, making attacks more difficult. The castle was also near quarries (so stone was available) and drinkable water. Henry II spent massive amounts of money shoring up the castle's defenses, turning it into a virtually impenetrable fortress. However, it still had a few key weaknesses: It was away from civilization, and so few people were around to maintain it.
