Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon church") believe that Jesus Christ is the head of their church. Jesus operates His church through direct revelation to the Prophet. The Prophet is assisted by two Counselors, and together these three make up the First Presidency, the highest governing body in the Church. Below the First Presidency is the Quorum of Twelve Apostles. In order for any major change to be made, all 15 of the above mentioned (First Presidency and Twelve Apostles) must reach a consensus. The "General Officers" of the Church are the international leaders of the various auxiliary organizations (Relief Society, Sunday School, Young Women, Young Men, Primary) who often assist and work with the Quorum of Twelve in various capacities.

The line of priesthood authority then goes to the Seven Presidents of Seventy, who govern over eight quorums of seventy Seventies. First and Second Quorums of Seventies are "General Authorities" meaning they help with the overall church, while the Third through Eighth Quorums of Seventies act as regional representatives of the Church in areas around the world. Below the Seventies are Stake Presidents, who preside over 'stakes' (groups of 5-15 local congregations) with the help of two counselors, a High Counsel of ordained High Priests, and leaders of Auxiliary organizations such as the women's Relief Society, Sunday School, and children's Primary. Followed by these are Bishops, who preside over congregations with the help of two counselors and leaders of Auxiliary organizations mirroring the stake organization. Leaders of the various organizations rely on congregation members to serve as assistants, teachers, etc to make the congregation function.

The Priesthood line of authority above is over the spiritual affairs of the church, while the temporal affairs are overseen by the Presiding Bishopric, who report directly to the First Presidency.
