The study of law and political philosophy can influence the thinking of elected representative's and people who may become an elected official. Clearly laws affect society. Students of law & political philosophy also affect society. Such an education may determine how a student votes for public officials. In addition, the study of economic systems can result what is mentioned above.

There are many examples of this and I'll point out one major situation that fits into my answer to the question at hand.

The current US President is an attorney. He obtained his law degree from Harvard I believe. Thus he was an active student in law, political philosophy and most probably in economics. He served as a US Senator. When the USA's largest auto maker, General Motors, had to seek protection under Federal bankruptcy laws, the US President had the option of not recommending a Federal "bailout" of GM. His understanding of what could happen to the USA economically evidently swayed him to propose that the USA infuse Federal funds into GM and become a major shareholder as well. Here we see that whether other people agreed with his decision or not, the President's education certainly played a role in his decision. Society was affected as thousands of GM workers were not laid off, and GM now continues to operate without Federal support.
