In New Moon, second in the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyers, Bella gets a paper cut opening a birthday present, and Jasper reacts violently. Edward saves Bella, but feels he needs to take his family and leave to prevent her from getting hurt further. Bella is in a state of depression and disorientation, and confines to Jacob for help. Bella and Jake become closer than ever, but then he changes. Suddenly, she finds out that "the new Jake" and his new group of friends are really a pack of vampire hunting werewolves. They were the ones who killed Laurent. One day Bella cliff-dives while waiting for Jake on the beach, and Alice has a vision and thinks she's committing suicide Edward hears this from Rosalie and goes to the Voultri to be killed; because he will not live without Bella being alive. Alice and Bella make it to Italy just in time to save him, in return that they turn Bella immortal from being exposed to vampires. Edward realized how much he had put Bella through by leaving, and promises to never leave her again.
