In the first chapter of "The Watson's Go to Birmingham - 1963" the reader is introduced to the Watson family - Momma, Dad, Kenny, little sister "Joey" and big brother Byron. The family lives in Flint, Michigan and are enduring a very cold winter. Outside, Byron and Kenny are playing when Byron somehow gets his lips frozen to the rearview mirror of the family car. After some attempts to free Byron, Momma finally solves the problem by ripping Byron's face off of the mirror. The chapter closes as the family decides to head over Aunt Cydney's house, which has a brand new furnace.
