The swirling of winds, ocean currents, bathroom drains, tornados and similar is a result of the Coriolis effect. Thechnically it is descrined as a deflection of moving objects when they arei placed in a rotating reference frame.
Boom
The swirling shape of a hurricane is the result of the fact that it spins as it draws air inward. The spinning is due to the Coriolis effect, a consequence of earth's spin. Air flowing into a storm will be deflected to the right if it is in the northern hemisphere and to the left if it is in the southern hemisphere.
A swirling vertical funnel that occurs over a body of water is termed a "waterspout."

The effect of the Earth's rotation on air circulation is called the Coriolis Effect.
It is thought that convection currents in the molten layers of the earth are responsible for some of the movement of tectonic plates. The fact that the earth-moon center of gravity, the barycenter, is always within the body of the earth and is always swirling around must have an effect as well, along with general tidal forces.
The trapping of heat by the Earth's atmosphere is called the greenhouse effect. During the greenhouse effect, radiation becomes entrapped which results in the heating of the Earth.
