Phosphite is a name that has been applied to both PO32- (recent trend) and HPO32- (historically).

Note that the HPO32- is now recommended to be called hydrogen phosphite anion or sometimes the phophonate anion.

HPO32-is different from hydrogen carbonate HCO3- where the H is bonded to O, as it contains a H-P bond and that H does not react with base.

What is the chemical formula for gold phosphite?

Well, we know that the polyatomic ion phosphate has the formula PO4^3- The suffix "ite" tells us that we take one oxygen atom. So phosphite is PO3^3- Since the charge of phosphite is negative three, we need 3 gold ions to create a neutral ionic compound. So, the chemical formula for gold phosphite is Au3PO3

Is ph3 polyatomic ion?

No, it's a colorless flammable gas called phosphine. PO3, however, is a polyatomic ion, and its name is phosphite.

Example of polyatomic ions?

How do you measure polyatomic atoms?

An atom is the smallest unit. Anything polyatomic is not an atom.

Ions that are made of more than one atom are examples of what?

Ions made up of more than one atom are called polyatomic ions.

How are polyatomic ions usually charged?

It depends but most are negative, e.g. nitrite, sulfate, nitrate, sulfite, chlorite, phosphate, phosphite, permanganate, chromate, dichromate etc. There are however, polyatomic ions that are positively charged.

What is the chemical name for PO2 3-?

PO2 is a polyatomic ion with the name hypophosphite. Its charge is -3. It has 2 less oxygen atoms than phosphate, the "parent" polyatomic, hence the -ite suffix and the hypo- prefix.

What is polyatomic ion in chloric acid?

The definition of a polyatomic ion is an ion made up of multiple atoms. Because Cl- is only one atom of chlorine it is not polyatomic.

How do the differences in the polyatomic ions PO33Β and PO43 help you determine whether each ends in -ite or -ate?

As a convention the first is called the ion phosphite and second phosphate.
