It is used to support the filament assembly.
Remove the outer taillight assemblies using a Phillips screwdriver #1 size. There are 2 screws for each taillight assembly. When the screws are removed, pry the light assembly from the body of the car. A thin flathead screwdriver is best used for this. The brake light is located as the closest bulb to the trunk. It uses a bulb type 7443, which is indicated on your light assembly. Simply remove the bad bulb and replace with a new one, reinstall the light assembly, and you're good to go.

Caution Halogen bulbs contain gas under pressure. Handling a bulb improperly could cause it to shatter into flying glass fragments. To help avoid personal injury: Turn off the lamp switch and allow the bulb to cool before changing the bulb. Leave the lamp switch OFF until the bulb change is complete. Always wear eye protection when changing a halogen bulb. Handle the bulb only by its base. Avoid touching the glass. Keep dirt and moisture off the bulb. Properly dispose of the used bulb. Keep halogen bulbs out of the reach of children. Raise the hood. Remove the headlamp assembly bolts from the upper fascia support. Slide the headlamp assembly outward enough to release the headlamp bracket tabs from the slots in the upper fascia support. Position the headlamp assembly away from the vehicle body to access the electrical connector. Disconnect the electrical connector from the headlamp assembly. Remove the headlamp assembly from the vehicle. Disconnect the electrical connector from the headlamp bulb/socket. Remove the headlamp bulb/socket retainer ring from the headlamp, by turning counterclockwise. Remove the headlamp bulb/socket from the headlamp assembly.
I was told by the Parts Dept. at my local Subaru dealer that two types of fog lamp bulbs were used on the 2005 Subaru Forester. A "H3" bulb or a "9006" bulb. The only way to know for sure which bulb you have is to pull the Fog Lamp assembly.
I couldn't find an answer online, so I just figured it out. Here's what I did. I opened the hood, and taking using a 10mm (I think) socket, I removed two bolts that were holding on the headlight assembly. Once the bolts were off, I eased the assembly off and turned it so that the back of the assembly was facing up. Unclip the wiring from the back of the old light bulb, then turn the bulb so that it eases out of the housing. Carefully remove the new bulb from it's packaging (be careful not to touch the bulb as the oils from your fingers will cause the new bulb to burn out quickly) and ease into place where the old bulb used to be. Snap the wiring back on. Fit the assembly back into the vehicle. Make sure that the two stabilizers at the bottom of the assembly are back in place, then screw the two bolts in to secure. If the bottom stabilizers are not reattached, the headlamp assembly will point upward too much, and there may be a bit of movement in the assembly. The gap between the van and the assembly below the light should match the other side. That's what worked for me!
Treasure is formed by people who deem certain objects (or other people, as it is used as a term of endearment) to be valuable.
