South Dakota was part of the Dakota Territory. The Dakota Territory existed from March 2, 1861, until November 2, 1889.

From 1861 to 1883, Yankton (SD) was the territorial capital. The capital was moved to Bismarck (ND) in 1883.

Large parts of Montana and Wyoming were also part of the Dakota Territory in 1861.

Population in the Dakota Territory increased slowly in the early years, mostly due to the idea that the Sioux Indians were very hostile. Later, population growth was due to the railroads being built through the territory.

Gold being discovered in the Black Hills attracted more settlers to the territory.

The economy was based on agriculture, with wheat being the main crop. Cattle ranching and mining were also a part of the economy.
