The buoyant effect is the tendency of less dense substances floating in more dense substances. It is an upward force exerted by a fluid that opposes the weight of an immersed object. The submerged object or substance is under greater pressure at lower points than at higher, which results in an acceleration upwards. The magnitude of the acceleration is proportional to the difference in pressure between the top and bottom and is equivalent to the weight of the fluid that would otherwise be occupying the space.
