Depending upon the type of filter, it can be used for several different purposes (adding meds etc) but normally it is simply a place where the water sits either prior to or after being filtered. In some filtration set ups the retention tank is filled with algae and the water is oxegenated and purified even more before going into the aquarium.
A tank or vessel used to hold aquarium water outside of the main tank. Often used to feed or house a filtration system.
Sludge retention time = lbs of SS in the system/lbs of SS leaving system or aeration tank MLSS x volume of aeration tank and secondary clarifier (as million gallons) x 8.34 / WAS TSS conc x WAS flow x 8.34 + Effluent TSS conc x Effluent Flow X 8.34
Sounds like high ammonia levels to me. What kind of filtration do you have? If it's too weak for the size of your tank, this may be the cause. A good rule of thumb is to provide a filtration system that is 2x the capacity of your tank, ie...tank+30 gallons, power filter capacity is 60 and above.. GOOD LUCK!
Usually, most goldfish will need a filtration system. Most get large and create a lot of waste. If not have a filter system, get one or live with a LOT of tank cleanings.
Nothing a strong one...
The primary function of the evaporative emissions system (EVAP system) is to regulate the engine and fuel tank vapors. It keeps the vapors from being released into the air by collecting them in an activated charcoal storage tank.

Depending on the type of filtration you are talking about you can look in certain places online such as Turtlecare for water tank filtration and Purwater for human water filtration systems. You can also find personal reviews of specific filtration systems on websites such as Amazon and Yelp.
ALL fish need filtration.
The charcoal in some filters actually perform chemical filtration in your fish tank filter. The porous surface of the charcoal traps minutes traces of nitrates and phosphates during the filtration process.
The key for that will be strong powerful filtration. Oscars require a tank measuring at least 70 inches (about 180 cm) with a capacity of 100 gallons and up (about 400 liters). Due to its eating habit (messy eater that produces a lot of waste) water changes should perform often and powerful filtration system is essential.
