Richard Steele's book The Funeral, was his first and arguably best-constructed play. Also known as Grief A La Mode, the book was a witty attack upon the social morality of the day. Steele clearly enjoyed taking aim at the often pontifical manners applied in social circles of that era. It highlighted the behaviour and personality of the protagonist, a widow who basked in being so overtly hypocritical towards her friends and guests.
