Mara, Daughter of the Nile is a complicated book, but here is a general summary. Mara is a slave in Egypt, who is purchased by a man who puts her to work as a spy for Queen Hapshetsut. She is sent to act as a translator for Princess Innani, who is to marry the Prince. On her way, Mara meets Sheftu, and discovers that he is also a spy, but for the Prince. He thinks Mara is a runaway and blackmails her into working for him to place the Prince, who is the rightful pharaoh, on the throne. Mara plays the game of double spy for a while, but is soon found out by both sides, and her life - as well as her relationship with Sheftu - are in peril.
