"The Lotus Eaters" is a poem from Alfred Tennyson's longer work, "The Lotos-Eaters." It tells the story of a group of sailors who are seduced by the narcotic effects of the Lotus flower, which makes them lose their desire to continue their journey home. The poem explores themes of escapism, the allure of pleasure, and the conflict between duty and desire.

The title refers to the Greek myth of the land of the lotus eaters where anyone who eats the magical flower becomes an idle philosopher and forgets about home. This is mirrored in somersets short story because when Wilson gets a taste for Capri, he thinks that it would be much better to live a life of leisure on the island than to go back to England

The lotus eaters either wanted entertainment or food from their victims. Let's just say that they weren't the nicest creatures in mythology.

In The Odyssey of Ulysses one of the first places his fleet stopped on his long journey home was the Isle of the Lotus Eaters. One of Ulysses' ship when a short and the men set out to scout for provisions. They never came back. So Ulysses and his boat-load of men went to look for them. They found their lost party in a small community of Lotus eaters. It is a scene very similar to what would be a crack house today. Ulysses' men did not want to return to their ship; they just wanted to stay with the Lotus-eaters and stay drugged. Ulysses forced them back on-board ship.
