NAME PLATE: a name plate is a picture next to your gamer tag which you can turn on and off via bungie.net. there are different kinds of nameplates which you have to unlock in different ways. a few examples are: Assault rifle name plate unlocked by being a beta tester, DMR name plate unlocked by signing up to bungie pro, septagon nameplate unlocked by having an account on bungie.net etc. etc.
EMBLEM: nothing is required to have an emblem of any kind (besides a copy of halo reach) you can change your emblem by going to emblem in the armory and you can change the emblem colors by going to colors which is also in the armory.
