the thing is that J.K.Rowling wrote Harry Potter and the philosophers stone around 2001..so maybe she wanted to follow that timeline..

NS thanks to neraly headless nick you know that harry's 2nd year was actually 1993 so you can work alot of the restb of the book time using that as harry is 12 at that point giving you his brith year and that pretty much all you need to know to work the other timeings


-In the 7th book when they are at Godrics Hollow on harry's parents grave stone it says that they died in 1981, and harry was one then. so that would mean he would of been born in 1980 and started school in 1991 im pretty sure
