If you are referring to bill collectors, as long as you do something indicating that you do indeed owe the bill... they can continue trying to collect it.

I know it sounds dishonest, but if you totally ignore them and never admit owing the money a statute of limitations eventually kicks in and they should go away. But even admitting once to owing the money resets this time limit.

This time limit is controlled by state law and therefor varies from state to state. It also varies by the original form of the debt. For example here in Montana the limits are as follows: (see the link for other states)

  • Oral agreement, 5 years
  • Contract, 8 years
  • Note, 8 years
  • Revolving account, 5 years
