Realism 1820-1920

The social consequences of the industrial Revolution were enormous. Within decades hundreds of thousands of workers moved into industrial centers. This overwhelmed the cities and shanty towns sprung up along the outskirts of towns where the people lived in extremely poor conditions.

Artists of this time wanted to break free of the previous romantic notions and show life as it really was; especially the ugly side that the Industrial Revolution had created.

Artists broke free of all traditional subjects, such as religion, mythology and history that previous artists had drawn from. They began to paint and draw the serious tragic representation of everyday life.
