I assume you mean 'Tie rod ends' , - obviously cost depends on vehicle. More expensive and bigger vehicles have more expensive parts. Tie rod ends for a 2004 Windstar are about $45 each.

You are probably thinking of the TIE rod. Most cars have four. Two on each side in the front. One is called the Inner Tie Rod End and the other is called the Outer Tie Rod End. They attach the steering rack to the front tires allowing you to steer your vehicle. They normally contain joints that wear out over time. When worn, the steering can feel loose and the car (and steering wheel) may shake when driving (even when not applying the brake). They also play a role in the alignment of the vehicle. The inner and outer ends screw onto each other and are kept from turning by use of a bolt. When aligning, an automotive technician will turn the inner tie rod end into or out of the outer tie rod end to the vehicles specifications and then tighten the bolt to keep the two from turning and coming out of adjustment while the vehicle is being driven. Worn tie rod ends are one of the major causes of uneven tire wear (aside from alignment and failure to properly rotate). In fact, not replacing a tie rod will cost you a lot more in new tires than it will cost you to have the rod replaced. They are also very simple to replace yourself although you would need to have an alignment performed immediately after replacement. The tie rod is the rod between the tie rod ends there are only two.

The tire rod is the rod used in the car trunk to secure the spare tire and jack on many cars. It comes as a rod screwed into the bottom of the trunk, and a plastic or metal nut which tightens down and holds the spare tire and jack assembly in place.
