If it's factory installed...it's for the rear window defroster.
The autos do not have a safety switch....They have a sensor located in the trans itself that tells the ecu if its in neutral/park.....I believe its a 3 pin plug going into the trans itself,.....trace it and see where it leads.....You may be able to hook up a toggle switch..
on the right side of the trans
The nuetral safety switch may be bad or not hooked up right on the trans. that was installed.

There is no kill switch on a 1998 Trans Am.
it is part of the trans range sensor. mounted on the right side of the trans. The shift lever hooks to it also
THE SWITCH IS ON THE TRANSMISSION IT IS CALED A TRANS RANGE SWITCH TR SWITCH IT IS MOUNTED ON THE SIDE OF THE TRANS WHERE THE LEVER THAT SHIFTS THE TRANS YOU NEED TO REMOVE THAT LEVER I THINK THE TRANS NEEDS TO BE IN NETERAL THE PART WILL HAVE INST WITH IT HOPE THIS HELPS
It is screwed into the driver's side of the transmission, right in the middle.

The most common switch mounted there is the switch for the rear defrost. It could also have been a switch to power a factory supplied amp for the stereo. Most likely it is the first.
the neutral safty switch is located in the trans range switch if you have an aw4 auto trans replace or clean and reinstall the switch
