Satirical, Ironic, Tongue-in-cheek
The tone in fact presumes naiveté in a way that smiles and winks at the reader. To use some buzz words, it is "cynical," "ironic," and "playful." And it cracks us up.
Napoleon, the pig leader, is the most corrupt human-like character in "Animal Farm." He manipulates the other animals for his own gain, betraying the principles of the original rebellion against the humans to establish himself as a tyrannical leader. His actions demonstrate the corrupting influence of power.
The first animal to die on the farm (while it's still known as "Manor Farm") is Old Major. The first animal to die after the farm was renamed "Animal Farm" is a sheep in the Battle of the Cowshed.

After the executions in "Animal Farm," the mood of the story becomes more somber and tense. The animals begin to fear Napoleon's growing power and the oppressive atmosphere on the farm increases. The sense of optimism and rebellion that was present earlier starts to fade away as the animals realize the harsh reality of their situation.
