For example, people exchanged knowledge and technical advancements which helped those who did not have that information. But the "exchange" also, unwittingly, transferred diseases, plant diseases, animal diseases, etc. Many countries STILL fight problems of animals and plants that were brought to their countries and overcame plants and animals native to those areas. This is why countries have strict rules about what travelers can bring into their countries.
