Multitasking refers to performing several tasks at once. In computing, it refers to your computer's ability to run multiple programs at the same time. Although it is referred to as "multitasking", it is not really simultaneously performing several tasks. Rather, it quickly (hundreds of times per second) switches between each running program and does one little thing before moving on to the next. This is not actually something the computer (as in the hardware) does itself, but rather is a function of the operating system. The main purpose of an OS is to manage tasks for the user.
