I guess the best way to answer that is genetic variation.... otherwise we would all have the same physical characteristics. This ensures health of a species as some people may be more resistant to a virus than another and so theoretically the fitter and stronger will produce more young and pass on those 'good' genes to more offspring.

Mutation can produce different molecular forms of the same gene. This is the ultimate reason for alleles. Just remember that mutations are rare..especially beneficial ones or neutral ones that have no effect on the individual.
