Small engines....like lawn mowers, compressors, etc typically take a 30 or 40 weight oil. Also, it used to be recommended to break in a new engine with a single weight motor oil.

Depends on the engine... For our Series 60s we use SAE 15w-40 and for our 2 strokes we use SAE 30.
Manufacturers mix various oils to make an 'SAE 40' oil product. Such a mixture will not have a molecular weight.
