A cross pein hammer has a wedge shape at one end. It is used by metalworkers when they are forging. They use this type of hammer to make the metal stretch.

Examples: When forging one may want to bend the metal. By using a cross peen one can stretch the hot metal in such a way that it bends more easily because one sde is stretched a little more than the other. Also, there is such a thing as 'moving a hole.' This is done by stretching the metal between the two holes a little so the distance between them gets bigger. On an anvil there are some tools one can use like a cross peen hammer, they are called fullers. A lower fuller would be fitted into the hole in the anvil and the hot work placed above and hammered to get the stretching. Or one could use an upper fuller to work the hot metal from the top. Or they could both be worked together to get even more stretching. The cross peen could be used in the same way as these upper and lower fullers with an anvil.

With a cross peen the stretching of a flat bar can be controlled more easily than with a ball peen. Sometimes it might be more convenient to have the wedge shape vertical than across so one can stretch work that is placed in a different position more easily.
