Because it makes the onion root tip very thin - to get best results they tend to try and make it one cell layer thick. This way when you look at under a microscope with dye on it, we can see it clearer and more accurately. You can then distinguish between anaphase, interphase and so on.

Why do you see chloroplasts in the Elodea cell but not the onion cell?

Because an onion develops in the ground, and chloroplasts develop in the sunlight. Therefore no chloroplasts form. Think of it this way: Tree leaves contain chloroplasts because they contain chlorophyll in order for the leaves to turn colors. But who has ever heard of an onion changing colors because it's fall?! Onions dont needchloroplasts, so they dont have them.

How i can preserve onion root tips?

Cut 2--3 cm long freshly grown roots and transfer them to freshly prepared fixative, i.e., aceto-alcohol (1:3:: glacial acetic acid : ethanol). Keep the root tips in the fixative for 24 hours and then transfer them to 70% ethanol (for preservation and use in future). Onion root-tip cells have a cell cycle of approximately 24-hour duration, i.e., they divide once in 24 hours, and this division usually takes place about two hours after sunrise. Therefore, roots grown on water should be cut only at that time to score maximum number of dividing cells.

Can you use an onion to grow an onion?

Unlike many other vegetables, onions can be used to regrow new onions by planting either a whole onion bulb or part of the onion that contains the root mass on the bottom. Once planted and hydrated, the roots on the bottom of the onion will begin to grow, and green onions will form out of the top of the vegetable. Onions can be used to grow new onions either using water - which is called hydroponic growing - or traditionally, using soil.
