This is probably a commemorative coin issued by the US mint in 1986. If so, these one dollar commemorative coins usually weigh in at .95 OZ and are 90% silver. If so, this coin would carry a value of $9.33 melt currently.
I think you're probably refering to the 1986 Statue of Liberty Centennial Dollar (which has the words "Ellis Island Gateway to America" on the obverse to the left of the Statue of Liberty). The coin is worth about $13.50, whether it's the Uncirculated coin with a "P" mintmark from the Philadelphia mint or the Proof coin with the "S" mintmark from the San Francisco mint.
