What is MS60?

Mint State 60 means an uncirculated coin. Uncirculated coins are graded from MS-60 to MS-70. An MS60 coin may have many bag marks from shipping and hairline scratches and some details may be missing due to a light strike, but it cannot show any evidence of wear. An MS70 coin must have a full strike on a flawless planchet and show absolutely no signs of any damage. The grades of MS61 to MS69 are, naturally, somewhere between the two.

How do you tell the grade on a 1903 Indian Head penny?

Grade is determined by the amount of wear, nicks and scratches a coin has on it. In the following list you will see the various grades and their descriptions for the Indian Head Cent. Indian Head Cents G4.......The word "LIBERTY" is not visible on the headband of the headress. VG8....At least 3 letters of "LIBERTY" are readable on the headband. F12.....The word "LIBERTY" is completely visible. VF20...Slight but even wear on the word "LIBERTY" on the headband. EF40...The word "LIBERTY" is sharp and defined. All other details of the design are sharp. There is only slight wear on the end of the ribbon of the headdress along the side of the neck. MS60....No trace of wear. Some nicks and light scratches may be present. The coin may or may not have mint luster. MS61 - MS70.....No trace of wear. With each higher grade the coin will have fewer nicks and light scratches. At MS70 the coin is perfect with no wear, no nicks, no scratches.
