You should have your coin examined in person. All 1938 nickels were struck at the Denver Mint and have a "D" mintmark; however there's an error variety that resulted from an attempt to recycle dies that had been prepared for the San Francisco Mint but never used.

These coins show an "S" underneath the "D" and can be worth anywhere from $6 to $900 depending on condition.

Why is the value of a 1938-D Buffalo nickel higher than common date Buffaloes even though its mintage is fairly high?

The 1938-D Buffalo Nickel does not seem to have a higher value than other common dates according to the listings I watch. The only increase in value shown is for the D/S and D/D mintmark errors.

What is the value of a 1928 buffalo nickel?

This famous design is called either a buffalo nickel or an Indian head nickel; both names are about equally common. Please see the question "What is the value of a 1928 US nickel?" for more information. 1928 is not a rare date for Buffalo nickels. In average circulated condition it's worth about 50 cents. If it has enough details to still clearly see the entire horn on the buffalo, it will be worth $8.00 or more. Check the back, under the FIVE CENTS for a letter "D" or "S". Having one of these mintmarks will make your coin worth more -- especially in the higher grades.

What can anyone tell me about my 1918 Buffalo Indian Head Nickel which is gold in color.?

The Buffalo Indian Head Nickel was minted from 1913 to 1938. Most of these coins were made of a copper-nickel alloy, but some were plated in gold as a novelty or for jewelry purposes. If your 1918 Buffalo Nickel is gold in color, it is likely plated and not made of pure gold. The gold plating does not add significant value to the coin for collectors.

What is 1938 nickel worth?

1938 was the last year of issue for the Buffalo Nickel (also called the Indian Head nickel). It was the only year since the coin was first minted in 1913, that only one mint location (Denver) was used. Only 7.02 million were minted in 1938, which makes it somewhat scarce. An unknown number of them show the "D" mint mark stamped over an "S" mint mark. These are more difficult to find and are worth $5 or so even in very worn condition. The value of any coin is based on rarity and condition. A 1938 D Buffalo in especially nice, uncirculated condition can be worth over $250.

What is the value of a 1929 s buffalo nickel?
