What do the matching numbers on frame slide and barrel mean exampled CTP444?

Used to keep the parts identified for assembley. For gun collectors, it means that all of the parts that were originally assembled on the gun are still on the gun. A mismatched serial number means that the part with the non-matching number has been replaced, and may not fit correctly. Guns with matching numbers are more valuable to collectors.

Does serial number 577045 match on a Winchester Model 1890?

I'm not sure what you are asking. "Matching" serial numbers means the same serial number is stamped on two or more parts. On an antique gun this is important because the parts were hand finished so replaced parts will not fit perfectly and lower the value of the gun. A model 1890 should have the serial number on the lower tang (behind the trigger guard) and if higher than 232328 it should be repeated on the receiver extention attached to the barrel. So, if you have that same number in both those places, you have matching numbers. Number 577045 was manufactured in 1917.

I just purchased a handgun from a gun show but I notice the number on the barrel does not match the serial number shown on the frame.?

If it was represented as an all matching serial number gun, contact the seller to see if he will take it back or reduce the price. If not, was the price in line with a non-matching serial numbered pistol? If not, you are in my opinion, a victim of caveat emptor or buyer beware. If it was a German Luger or P.38, it still should be ok to shoot. The big harm is that the collector value is greatly diminished.

On the top of the Luger just in front of the action before the barrel starts is a four digit number In this case 1918 is this the serial number?

No, the 1918 is the date of manufacture of that particular gun. The serial number has more digits, likely five or six. If yours is a "matching Luger" then that means that the gun still has all of the original parts. You can tell this by looking for a two digit number on almost all of the smaller parts (toggle, barrel, barrel extension, trigger, trigger plate, bolt, etc). This number should be the same on all the parts and is the last two digits of the main serial number that is on the frame somewhere. If it is a completely matching Luger, then the magazine number will also match. Most of them don't, however. Most military lugers have between 2 and 4 numbers for the serial. some commercial lugers have up to five number serial.

What were the serial numbers on Davenport shotguns?

WHAT were they, or WHERE were they? There probably are none as they were manufactured long before serialization was required by law. Well, allow me to help you on the question as to where the serial number can be found on a W. H. Davenport shotgun. Remove the barrel. The shotgun I have has a flip open tab on the right side that is attached to a screw. Unscrew that and remove the barrel. On the underside of the barrel, at the breech, you'll find the serial number. Also, I noticed, behind the after end of the trigger guard are two numbers. Those two numbers match the last two numbers of the serial number. I'm not sure of their purpose. If this was helpful drop me a line at z.poet$pam@verizon.net (Of course, remove the $pam from the address.) Cheers, George Note: matching no's will be found on the lock, stock & barrel. The four didgits are found inside the frt stock that cradles the barrel, under the barrel where the lock will conceal when assembled. Also inside the top of the rear stock where the lock is attached, and under the lock behind the trigger guard as mentioned. And contrary to George, all numbers match on my "Davenport". signed the stunner.
