Since the US mint did not open until 1794, I wonder if you are talking about the 1776-1976 Kennedy bicentennial half dollar? Please see the Related Question for details
The US didn't mint half dollars until 1794. Check your coin again - I believe you'll find that the date is 1776-1976.
Please describe your coin to me - you obviously have a post-Colonian coin. The US Mint began producing Half Dollars in large quantities in the year, 1794 - the Flowing Hair Half Dollar.
No US coin is known as just a "LIBERTY" coin and ALL US half dollars have the word liberty on them. The first US half dollar was made in 1794.

A US half dollar with a date of 1979 is a Kennedy half dollar not a liberty half dollar. The coin has no silver and is only face value.
