1882 is not a rare date for $5 gold pieces with an S mint mark or no mint mark on the back under the eagle.
In circulated condition, it's worth about $220
In uncirculated condition, but with multiple noticeable contact marks (MS-60), it's worth about $300
In uncirculated condition, and with just a few small marks, it's worth about $600
In uncirculated condition, almost mark-free and well-struck, it's worth about $5,000
If the coin has a CC mint mark, the lowest price is about $300 and the top price is around $7,000
You can see that you need to have your coin professionally graded to be able to determine an exact grade. I suggest you check out the ANACS website, where you can see if they will be attending a coin show in your area, so you can take your coin to the show and get a free professional appraisal. Their website is : http://www.anacs.com
I hope this helps,
