Look on the front of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter above the date. There may be a D, S, or it may be blank. (The intertwined letters below the date are the designer's monogram and not a mint mark.) Also see whether the motto In God We Trust is on the front.

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 11/2011:

No mint mark (Philadelphia), no motto:

Very worn condition - $2,000

Moderately worn - $2,050

Slightly worn - $2,080

Almost no wear - $2,116

Uncirculated - $2,160 to $84,380 depending on quality

No mint mark, with motto:

Very worn - $2,000

Moderately worn - $2,050

Slightly worn - $2,080

Almost no wear - $2,116

Uncirculated - $2,160 to $34,450

"D" mint mark (Denver), no motto:

Very worn - $2,000

Moderately worn - $2,050

Slightly worn - $2,080

Almost no wear - $2,116

Uncirculated - $2,160 to $30,550

"D" mint mark, with motto:

Very worn - $2,000

Moderately worn - $2,050

Slightly worn - $2,080

Almost no wear - $2,116

Uncirculated - $2,160 to $85,150

"S" mint mark (San Francisco):

Very worn - $2,100

Moderately worn - $2,190

Slightly worn - $2,220

Almost no wear - $5,448

Uncirculated - $10,440 to $143,000

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.
