There were 4 varieties of Lincoln cent that year. Look on the front of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter. It may be blank or there may be an S. Also look on the back near the bottom to see if it has the small letters V.D.B.

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 04/2010:

No mint mark (Philadelphia), no VDB:

Very worn condition - $2.13

Moderately worn - $2.59

Slightly worn - $3.45

Almost no wear - $9.80

Uncirculated - $13.20 to $93.60 depending on quality

No mint mark, with VDB:

Very worn condition - $8.63

Moderately worn - $10.35

Slightly worn - $11.50

Almost no wear - $14.60

Uncirculated - $19.20 to $156.00

"S" mint mark (San Francisco), no VDB:

Very worn condition - $79.35

Moderately worn - $110.40

Slightly worn - $150.00

Almost no wear - $244.80

Uncirculated - $288.00 to $720.00

"S" mint mark, with VDB:

Very worn condition - $730.00

Moderately worn - $1110.00

Slightly worn - $1250.00

Almost no wear - $15,040

Uncirculated - $1650.00 to $4260.00

Any 1909-S cent should be examined and appraised in person by a numismatic expert.
It depends on the mint. Regardless of which one you have, its worth at least hundreds of times its face value. If it has no mint mark, its worth $1.15. If it has a VDB- $9.00. S- $47.00. S-VDB- $550.00. If you have one with minimal wear, it could be worth a few times these values. Congrats on the great find!

Is 1909 d Lincoln cent rare?

The Denver mint did not mint Lincoln cents in 1909, so a 1909 D Lincoln cent doesn't exist. The only two mints to mint Lincoln cents in that year were Philadelphia (no mintmark) and San Fransisco. Lincoln cents started being minted in Denver in 1911. But any 1909 cent is rare, but it prices differ greatly depending on the mintmark, so I can't really say any value without knowing the true mintmark of the coin.
