1909 is considered to be one of the key dates for Lincoln cents. Two varieties were struck at each mint, with those from San Francisco being scarcer.
Check the back of the coin at the bottom for tiny letters V.D.B. Those are the initials of Victor D. Brenner, the coin's designer. About 484,000 cents were minted at San Francisco before the Mint removed them in response to public pressure(*). The remaining 1.8 million 1909 S cents are blank at the bottom of the back side.
Retail values as of 01/2010 are approximately:
No initials:
Very worn condition - $79
Moderately worn - $114
Slightly worn - $150
Almost no wear - $230
Uncirculated - $288-720 depending on quality
With initials:
Very worn condition - $730
Moderately worn - $1140
Slightly worn - $1270
Almost no wear - $1500
Uncirculated - $1650-4300
(*) Brenner's initials were more prominently shown than the monograms on other coins of the time, which some people interpreted as being egotistical. There is also more than a little evidence that prejudice was a major factor, because Brenner wasn't a Christian. See for example see the recent flap over where "In God We Trust" should appear on the Presidential dollar coins.
