The US never made silver pennies - they would have been worth more than dimes! All 1909 cents were made of bronze; your coin is almost certainly plated for use in jewelry or something similar.
The bad news is that the plating destroyed any value the coin may have had to a collector. Depending on design and mint mark, the plating may have done anywhere from a couple of bucks to several thousand dollars worth of damage, sad to say.
