Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter below the eagle. It may be blank or there may be an O or S.

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 04/2011:

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Very worn condition - $17

Moderately worn - $32

Slightly worn - $90

Almost no wear - $323

Uncirculated - $450 to $5,400 depending on quality

"O" mint mark (New Orleans):

Very worn - $18

Moderately worn - $66

Slightly worn - $150

Almost no wear - $610

Uncirculated - $990 to $29,900

"S" mint mark (San Francisco):

Very worn - $17

Moderately worn - $38

Slightly worn - $96

Almost no wear - $384

Uncirculated - $630 to $30,550

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.

Alternate wordings:

These coins are almost always called Barber halves after their designer, Charles Barber. They're almost never called Liberty or Eagle halves because ALL half dollars have the word Liberty and an eagle on them. Morgan coins are dollars, not halves.

For an accurate assessment of value the coin needs to be seen and graded. Most coins of this type have seen heavy use and show a lot of wear. In general retail values for low grade coins are $12.00-$32.00, better grade are $90.00-$168.00 and coins showing almost no wear run from $312.00-$390.00
