To the best of anyone's knowledge, 1913 Liberty nickels are unauthorized coins struck clandestinely by some Mint employees. Only five are known and all are accounted for in various collections. Recent sales of the best specimens have been in the range of $3 million (!)

Because of the coins' great rarity there have been many counterfeits made. Be careful not to confuse this coin (Liberty head on the front, the Roman numeral V on the back) with the much more common Buffalo nickel; the fact that the Buffalo coin has the word "Liberty" on it sometimes throws a curve ball at novice collectors. There's a picture of a genuine 1913 Liberty nickel attached below.
