1921 is by far the most common year for Morgans.44,690,000 were minted at Philadelphia, 20,345,000 at Denver, and 21,695,000 at San Francisco so that year's output alone was a substantial fraction of the total number of Morgans struck in all prior years (1878-1904).

Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter above the DO in DOLLAR. It may be blank or there may be a D or S. (The M on the front of the coin is the designer's monogram and not a mint mark.)

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 04/2011:

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Very worn condition - $37

Moderately worn - $38

Slightly worn - $39

Almost no wear - $40

Uncirculated - $44 to $13,130 depending on quality

"D" mint mark (Denver):

Very worn - $37

Moderately worn - $38

Slightly worn - $39

Almost no wear - $41

Uncirculated - $48 to $31,250

"S" mint mark (San Francisco):

Very worn - $37

Moderately worn - $38

Slightly worn - $39

Almost no wear - $41

Uncirculated - $48 to $25,000

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.

FAQ's_about_Morgan_dollars">FAQ's about Morgan dollars

E Pluribus Unum

The motto E Pluribus Unum (Latin for "Out of Many, One") is on ALL $1 coins minted since 1878 so that's not specific enough to ID any one coin.

Silver Eagles

Silver eagles are bullion coins minted since 1986 for sale to collectors but not for spending. Morgan dollars were made for use in ordinary circulation just like dimes and quarters.

Why 1921?

The Morgan series was discontinued in 1904, but renewed demand for the coin forced one last year of minting before the new Peace design became available. The situation was analogous to the Anthony dollar that was originally discontinued in 1981 but had a final run in 1999, just prior to introduction of the Sacagawea dollar.

The 1921 Morgan dollars are the most common of all. For an accurate assessment of value the coin needs to be seen and graded. Retail values for circulated examples run from $28.00-$38.00 depending on the actual grade of the coin. Mint State coins are $40.00-$50.00 for most coins. Values are a market average and only for coins in collectible condition, coins that are bent, corroded, scratched, used as jewelery or have been cleaned have far less value if any to a collector or dealer.
as of 2009, between 12.00- 220.00 dollars
