The 1921-S Buffalo nickel is one of the rare coins of the series. A very worn coin graded (Good-04) could be worth as much as $50.00 or more if the nickel is only worn and not damaged as well. In the mint state (MS) grades, they can be worth as much as $1000.00 and up. There were only 1,557,000 of these nickels minted in San Francisco. Only 5 Buffalo nickels had mintage figures lower than that. Though the number of coins minted does not constitute the value of the coin, it is, nevertheless a factor. Coins that have been professionally graded and slabbed (encapsulated in a hard plastic holder with the assigned grade on the label) will be worth more than a raw coin of the same grade. When buying such coins, be advised that if the coin has been cleaned, polished, or otherwise tampered with to enhance its appearance, its value has been greatly compromised.
MoreLook on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter below the words FIVE CENTS. It may be blank or there may be an S. (The F on the front of the coin is the designer's monogram and not a mint mark.)Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 12/2010:
