This design was issued to mark the end of WWI and is normally called a Peace Dollar. Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter above the word ONE. It may be blank or there may be a D or S. (The intertwined A and F on the front of the coin are the designer's monogram and not a mint mark.)

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 04/2011:

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Very worn condition - $32

Moderately worn - $33

Slightly worn - $33

Almost no wear - $35

Uncirculated - $41 to $4,620 depending on quality

"D" mint mark (Denver):

Very worn - $32

Moderately worn - $33

Slightly worn - $33

Almost no wear - $36

Uncirculated - $48 to $5,160

"S" mint mark (San Francisco):

Very worn - $32

Moderately worn - $33

Slightly worn - $33

Almost no wear - $36

Uncirculated - $43 to $24,380

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.

FAQ's"E Pluribus Unum"

All Peace dollars carry that motto as do most other US Coins so it's not something that helps to ID a particular coin.

"Trvst"

The spelling is NOT an error. In the early 20th century it was a common affectation for artists to use the Roman alphabet when lettering classically-themed designs. Latin had only 24 letters; V served as a consonant, a vowel with the "u" sound, AND the number 5. Other coins and artworks from the same period also have the same seemingly odd spelling as well.
Assuming the coin is circulated and has no mintmark, the 1923 Peace dollar is a very common high mintage coin. For an accurate assessment of value the coin needs to be seen and graded. Most coins show a lot of wear. In general retail values for low grade coins are $31.00-$32.00, better grade are $33.00-$34.00 and coins showing almost no wear run from $35.00-$37.00. Values are a market average and only for coins in collectible condition, coins that are bent, corroded, scratched, used as jewelry or have been cleaned have far less value if any to a collector or dealer.
