The coin is generally referred to as a Peace dollar because it was issued to mark the end of the Great War (= WW I as we now sadly know).

Look on the reverse side near the tail feathers. If there is a tiny S, your coin was minted in San Francisco and has a retail value of maybe $25 to $35.

However, if there is no mint mark you will need to have it professionally appraised. 1928 dollars are unusual in that Philadelphia issues are rarer than the branch mint issues, and a genuine 1928 dollar from Philly will retail in the $350 to $450 range.

Condition-condition-condition! If very badly worn, it might go for less than $1, but if it has most of the details clearly visible it would be from $5 - $10. And if it is certified as a high grade uncirculated, it could be a couple hundred dollars.

How much is an 1896 Indian penny with the word liberty in excellent condition worth?

In numismatic "Very Fine" condition (some wear, but all details very clear and distinct) it might retail for about $5. In "Extremely Fine" (very little noticeable wear) that value could go as high as $12. Note that ALL U.S. coins have the word LIBERTY on them so that's not anything that helps to ID a specific coin.
