It's zinc-coated steel, not aluminum or silver(*). Copper was needed to make ammunition so in 1943 the mint made pennies out of scrap steel instead of bronze.

About a billion were struck and a lot of them were saved so they don't have much extra value. In average condition they're worth about a quarter, plus or minus.

(*) If you consider it for a minute, a silver penny would have been worth more than a dime and an aluminum penny would be so light it would blow away in a slight breeze, so it couldn't be either of those metals.
