Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter to the right of Monticello. It may be blank or there may be a D.

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 03/2010:

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Very worn condition - $0.12

Moderately worn - $0.18

Slightly worn - $0.24

Almost no wear - $0.60

Uncirculated - $0.96 to $100.00 depending on quality

"D" mint mark (Denver):

Very worn condition - $5.40

Moderately worn - $6.60

Slightly worn - $7.20

Almost no wear - $9.10

Uncirculated - $12.00 to $156.25

If your coin has a D mint mark, make sure that the zero is the same size as the rest of the numbers in the date. Some years ago there was a craze for these coins and the price was much higher. As a result there were some attempts to alter 1958-D nickels by removing the bottom of the "8", but the remaining O is smaller than on a genuine 1950 coin.

US nickels show a picture of Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello, but they're not minted there. At that time there were 3 active mints: Philadelphia (no mint mark), Denver ("D"), and San Francisco ("S") although 1950 nickels weren't minted at the latter.
